Retina Associates also offers treatment for cystoid macular edema (CME), a condition involving the light-sensing cells that line the back of the eye.
Known as the retina, these cells are responsible for converting light rays to signals that the brain receives via the optic nerve and recognizes as images. Patients with CME have cyst-like structures within the macula that are filled with fluid and experience swelling. Distorted or blurred central vision typically occurs, with the peripheral vision not affected. In a small number of cases there is no visual loss associated with CME.
CME is most common following cataract surgery, with a small percent of such patients developing the condition in the weeks or months following treatment. There are a variety of treatments available, from steroid drops, oral medications, and injections to laser surgery focused on the repair of leaking blood vessels. Another advanced treatment, vitrectomy, involves the removal of some of the vitreous, the gel-like substance in the center of the eye.
